I was wondering if there was a way to remove the original message from a ticket thread. for example - when a user replies via email i want just their response not the original message in their reply.

Admin panel -> Settings -> Emails -> Strip Quoted Reply:

okay sorry but now i have another problem. i didn't  make it clear that i already had the strip quoted reply ticked. so i unticked it and the whole email was displayed in the ticket thread. but when i ticked the box again. i still received the whole email. very confusing.

Not with 1.9.  1.10 introduces thread editing however.
