When replying to a ticket, a new ticket get created.  This happened to me with an early version of 1.7, but an update fixed it.I just upgraded to 1.8.1.2 today and now having that issue again.  If possible, being to reply to customer would be preferable, but I see that isn't possible now.  Having it no create a new ticket would help at least.
