I've seen a few feature request to get this functionality implemented, yet as far as I know that never happened.
I've seen some board entries that suggest, that there is a way to modify the user interface to add the close button.
Does anyone know how to do that, and if that really works?

Of course you could add a close button if you know PHP/HTML if you are willing to modify the core code files. Yes if you do it right it will work. Good luck.
