Migrating running osTicket system & DBs to new sub-domain

Hi,

I have to move our osTicket system to a new sub-domain so that we can move our website to a new hoster. Can anyone help with some support/ guidance about what needs to be done to move the entire osT files & DBs to the new sub-domain?

Background: we have done a big website refresh after 7years & have moved to a new hoster but our osT DB's are too big to move so we decided to keep all our history and set up the osT system under a new sub-domain. This is not really an issue as our osT is only an internal system used by 10users to manage our enquiries so our customers will not notice a difference.

We have bought a new .org domain to host the osT system and will move our .com site soon, and I need help/ guidance on what we need to do about moving our osT system & DBs to the .org.

I’m confused by your statements. Are you simply wanting to change the subdomain or change the host/server as well?

No we are only moving to a new hoster for our current website (eg currentsystem.com) - our current hoster is based in Indonesia and is cheap (good during COVID!), but the hosted websites suffer from some technical SEO issues such as speed, etc.

For our osTicket system we want to move to a new domain on the current hoster (eg from currentsystem.com/osticket TO newdomain.com/osticket). This means migrate the existing osTicket system (files, DBs, etc) to the new domain.

We are staying with the same hoster for osTicket because the DBs are too big to move. Since the users of our osTicket system are our internal staff we are not too concerned with website speed.

Then all osTicket is concerned with is the Helpdesk URL under Admin Panel > Settings > System. The rest is DNS and web server configurations which is outside the scope of the software. It will also depend on your host and how they have their web servers configured. So in your DNS simply point the new domain to the IP of the old server and then contact your old host on how to setup web server rules to handle the new domain. You’ll likely have to use a subdomain instead though as you can’t route folder paths to different servers unless you had a proxy or something.

Thx that all seems pretty easy.

I assume that I will have to download a new osTicket version to the new sub-domain so that the files are found when I change the Helpdesk URL to the new sub-domain.

However what about the DBs? When I change the Helpdesk URL to the new sub-domain will the existing DBs still be used? Or do I need to "move" the DBs to the new sub-domain.

No, you do not need to download anything. This is where the webserver config/rules come into play; they will route the new domain to the existing codebase. This will depend on your host and how they have their systems setup so contact them for that part.

The same code and same dbs will be used, the domain will simply change.

nigelfish Contact your host provider and they can help you. You'll for sure need a new A record and https certificate if you had one before. Whatever you do, backup your DB and files!
