How do I designate a custom field as unique?

I have a custom short answer field in the contact information form that I'd like to designate as unique. Additionally, if feasible, I'm interested in enabling search functionality for this specific field within the user directory. Any guidance on achieving this would be appreciated.

There is no way to force a field to have unique data at this time. Also, you cannot search by custom fields via the User Directory.

There is no way for me to do that as there are simply too many changes and new code you would need to add. It wouldn't be simple at all. You'd need to add a new field type that enforces uniqueness, runs checks in all the field values in the db for that field (will be very expensive and not recommended for non-optimized databases), etc. Too much to explain.
