POP mail not working

Fetching mails does not work (anymore) after we migrated from version 1.9 to 1.17
We have the version with the Shagen skin implemented.
On the previous version we had pop3 settings to our on premise exchange server, this was working very well and now we can't get it to work. We tried to connect to gmail addresses as well but no luck.
There is no firewall installed on our Linux Ubuntu 18.04 server, telnet to the server works like a charm
p.s. the version is 1.17 and not 1.17.* because of the preinstalled skin.

Installed 1.17.3 version in a subdirectory and that is working (but no Shagen template) I installed it as a fresh one.
Looking for the files that have been changed since version 1.17 but even after replacing the old file with the new files it's still not working.

Any suggestions?

You are on your own with this problem. If you refuse to update to the latest version then that's on you.

You should contact the author of the skin/theme mod and get them to update it to a contemporary version.
If they will not update the theme mod then you probably shouldn't run it.
