Custom Email template not displayed in email anymore

It worked for 3 years untill I updated to 1.17.2
Could somebody me explain why the custom form/template is fetching the incorrect email template variable.
See below the pictures, it doesn't make sense that the offboarding email template is selected but reverts it into an incorrect email.
I have spent hours to recognize the problem but I have no clue anymore.

There is a bug where it doesn’t use the emails defaults when fetching. This will be addressed in the next release. There are a couple of patches available on GitHub that you can apply and retest in the meantime.
