server 500 error everytime an email is supposed to be sent

I've noticed that everytime I do anything that is supposed to generate in an email being sent, that I get a server 500 error. I have checked the error log and nothing is there. Here is my info:
osTicket Version v1.17 (1d8b790) — Up to date
Web Server Software Apache
MySQL Version 5.7.27
PHP Version 8.0.25

I am able to create tickets as a user, but as soon as I submit, server 500 error. The ticket does go through, but as soon as I try to respond as the admin, server 500 error. I tried testing an email in the back end, and it goes to server 500 error. I can't seem to get the email set up as POP or STMP, but isn't PHP supposed to be the default? So what have I not checked to make sure that's working? I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I think I figured it out. I didn't realize that I needed to actually update the email addresses in departments. But the emails are weird:

For one, it sounds like you are using Sendmail to send the mail as you don't have SMTP configured for any system email or you don't have an SMTP email setup as your system outgoing/system alert email. I would encourage you to setup SMTP for outgoing mail and retest.

Secondly, you'll probably want to upgrade to the tip of 1.17.x as it includes mailer and mail header bug fixes:

I can't get SMTP configured, and I have tried all my emails. Why can't PHP send basic text emails without scrambling them? So this won't work unless I can get SMTP configured? Why won't Sendmail work on its own?

Upgrade? I just installed the software yesterday. It wasn't the most recent version?

I haven't been able to replicate it so not sure why Sendmail has those issues but I believe "upgrading" to the tip of 1.17.x might help as I've mentioned above it includes mailer and mail header bug fixes.

"upgrade" is just the word I used as you will be replacing the files with a different version but it's just a simple task of replacing the current code files with the ones from the 1.17.x branch from github. v1.17 is the most recent official version but we have branches on github that have additional fixes applied that will be included in the next official release.

Reuploaded all files and still get that mime error with jumbled emails.

Was I supposed to be able to use the upgrade.php file, since when I tried that it said there wasn't anything to upgrade, but now my site is saying that an upgrade is availabe. When I click on it, it takes me to the version I already have. ???

I’m not going to explain this rn but just ignore that; it’s totally fine.

It sounds like there are further issues. You can look at our GitHub repo and apply any relevant changes (pull requests) manually or wait for the next release.
