Modifying Source Code Issue

I found a modification to allow agents to respond to ticket email alerts via email and have their response be logged as a reply and not an internal note. I can make the necessary changes in code but when doing so this breaks the images, font size and alignment of the overall site. The site itself functions properly but I don’t like that this breaks the look of the site. I’m wondering if theres a proper way to go about editing the php files other than through notepad that will not break the rest of the site? Based on a few tests it’s almost as if changing any of the files modified date time causes the sites look to change. Is that normal behavior? Thanks for any advice in advance.

I've modified osTicket quite a lot over the years using both notepad and notepad++ and another editor. I have never had any problems with modifying the source like you are describing. That being said I have broken the ui, but when I break it it breaks good and throws a php error to my error log.

That's what I was thinking as I've made modifications before. But even if I simply open the class.thread file and do a save without changing anything the site can no longer find the images that we're uploaded (logos). But once I put back the original file the site UI goes back to normal. Really makes no sense but wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing. Not sure if a previous modification could be causing some sort of conflict here. Thanks for your input.

Just an FYI in case anyone else comes across this. The issue here for some reason was modifying the code in notepad on the server itself and then saving. When I copied the file locally to my machine and made the necessary changes, then copied the file back over to the server the UI issues went away. Not sure why that would cause it but that's what I figured out to be the problem.
