Sounds handy, I have never seen the older versions. We use a little trick to do something similar. We post a reply and change the "To" field to "DO NOT EMAIL" then leave a comment which is safe enough that the user is ok with seeing still if they use the web interface, and it sets the ticket to answered. 

It was there in v1.9.3 which was the version we had before going to v1.10.1...
