Thanks for your help Peter.
Why not simply install osTicket v1.7 RC4 directly instead of Fantastico install then upgrade?
That would also be my first choice, but I simply don't understand the installation instructions on github... There is a great guide to the final/stable version (http://osticket.com/wiki/Installation(http://osticket.com/wiki/Installation)) but there must be a reason why there is no link to that page from the v1.7 RC4 announcement post (can I use that guide instead? are the instructions on github only meant for beta users?).
After clicking the link in "If you are installing osTicket for the first time, then simply follow installation guide" I see this page https://github.com/osTicket/osTicket-1.7/blob/master/README.md#installation(https://github.com/osTicket/osTicket-1.7/blob/master/README.md#installation).
Here are the problems that stopped me from installing osTicket v1.7 RC4 directly:
1) What is meant by "bleeding-edge installations"? English is not my first language, I know the term bleeding-edge, but I think I'm missing the point here.
2) "clone the public repository" - do you mean the folder osTicket is installed in, e.g. osTicket?
3) "Create a folder on you web server" (I know how to do that) "and cd into it" (cd into it? In the old days I used cd in dos to change directory, do you mean that I should open the folder? I use cPanel's File Manager or FileZilla to handle files and folders - I don't use commands but I guess it is simply an expression).
4) "Then clone the repository (the folder must be empty!): git clone https://github.com/osTicket/osTicket-1.7(https://github.com/osTicket/osTicket-1.7)" (I have no idea where to insert/how to execute this line...)
5) "osTicket uses the git flow development model, so you’ll need to switch to the develop branch in order to see the bleeding-edge feature additions. "(I don't know much about git flow development model - do I need to do this in able to install osTicket?)
6) "git checkout develop" (again, I don't know what to do with this line/code or whatever it is...)
7) "Follow the usual install instructions (beginning from Manual Installation above)" (I thought this was the Manual Installation instructions - now I'm really confused)
8) "except, don't delete the setup/ folder. For this reason, such an installation is not recommended for a public-facing support system." (but... the reason I'm installing osTicket is to provide a public-facing support system...)
and then I gave up! I am not a complete computer idiot so my guess is that I am not the only one who doesn't know what to do with this information. I guess the information is not for the ordinary user..
Hope you can guide me (and others) in the right direction, the manual installation procedure is probably very simple - thanks.
