PHP problems with installation

I have managed to install osticket and log on, but when trying to access the admin panel I get the following error:

PHP Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in D:\OSticket\include\pear\Mail\mimeDecode.php on line 335

This implies to me that ostickets isn't happy using the latest PHP version (PHP 5.3 (5.3.8)). What can I do?

Thanks Mathman. I found the solution that worked for me was changing the error reporting in main.inc.php to

"error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE ^ E_DEPRECATED);"
