Cant get attachments to work

Im in the control panel settings area under attachments and cant seem to get it to work i have created a folder called "attachments" with a folder permission of 777 located in the root of the website so "/attachments" i get the error "Invalid upload dir Directory must be valid and writeable" any ideas?
