Need help with permissions error message

I keep getting a permission message when I login to the admin panel. I changed the permissions to the settings.php using filezilla to 644 but the message does not go away.

This is the message I get.

Please change permission of config file (settings.php) to remove write access. e.g chmod 644 settings.php

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Is there any other fix for this issue other than upgrading? I have so many modifications, and I didn't keep track of all of them (stupid I know). I don't want to redo all those customizations after a new installation.

BTW, I'm running (v1.6 RC5).

You can try to chmod the file to 444.
