What are register globals

When I upgraded the other night, I now get a message in admin asking me to turn off register globals if possible. What are they?

And are they the reason no emails are suddenly going out like they did with the previous version and why there are no attachments when viewing a ticket in the staff area (when I did include attachments in a test ticket) ???

Wow! I just did the .php / .htaccess way of turning off the global registers and now attachments to support tickets show up in the staff admin ... I had another thread going about this ... fantabulous!

EDIT: Never mind, this did not solve my attachments problem.
