You should be able to upgrade PHP just fine. Just keep in mind that if you have a scheduled task running (for osTicket cron) you’ll need to update the PHP executable there as well. I would actually recommend PHP 8.4 but you’ll need to also upgrade osTicket for that. In all honesty, upgrading prerequisites differs from server to server and version to version (not osTicket version, server/OS version). When in doubt I always recommend looking online for guides. The good thing is you can upgrade PHP and other prerequisites independently from osTicket. Meaning you can usually upgrade PHP or Apache/LiteSpeed/IIS/NGINX without affecting osTicket. Then when ready you simply update some server configurations to swap the version over.
Now, like I said, since you are upgrading PHP I would actually recommend 8.4. osTicket v1.18.1 is also super vulnerable to some pretty serious vulnerabilities so I would upgrade to the latest, v1.18.4. Luckily for you, since you’re new and all, upgrading to a minor maintenance/security release on the same major series (ie. v1.18.x -> v1.18.x) is simply a matter of replacing the application files. There are no database patches needed so no upgrade wizard, etc. Just backup the existing application files in the site folder, save the config file (include/ost-config.php) somewhere easily accessible but super secure (it holds db info), remove the application files from the site folder, upload the latest version’s files to the site folder, copy over the config file to the new include/ folder, and restart the webserver and PHP-FPM (if you’re running it). Then visit the site in the browser, clear all cache/cookies/sessions, and login as normal. You should be able to see the latest version’s files reflected under Admin Panel > Dashboard > Information once all said and done.
Cheers.
