osTicket (v1.17.2) E-Mails

I want to use the email notification feature of OSTicket and yesterday I had a different version of OSTicket on the NAS that automatically sent emails to the ticket creator and the agent without me doing anything. Since I liked OSTicket so much, I installed it on a Debian VPS. However, the emails are not working in either direction. Could you please give me a tip on what might be causing this?

In order to receive emails as Tickets you need fetching (IMAP or POP3) or piping (local or remote).

For outgoing mail the best option is SMTP but you can also use PHPMail/Sendmail if configured appropriately on the server.
