Has anyone upgraded from 1.12 to the latest downloadable versions: 1.17 or 1.18? Any suggestions/setps or documentation to share?

Yes, simply follow the upgrade guide:
You can upgrade directly to v1.18.1. However, make sure you make backups of everything beforehand. Also it’s very important that you install latest builds of any plugins you currently have installed before upgrading the codebase.
