Outgoing (SMTP) - O365 - STARTTLS

Hello,

My osTicket environment is as follows:
osTicket v1.17-rc3
PHP 8.0.22
Apache/2.4.6 (CentOS)
10.8.3-MariaDB

I'm trying to set up SMTP communication and bind it to an O365 account using Basic Auth, but Laminas throws an Exception: Service X could not be created. Reason: smtp.office365.com is unsupported SSL type.

I've tried using tls://smtp.office365.com (& port number 587), but the result is the same. According to Microsoft, we can use SSL/TLS regarding IMAP and POP, but when it comes to SMTP - it should be STARTTLS. On the other hand, Microsoft did give up on TLS 1.0, but TLS 1.2 should still be in the game.

Is it possible to configure STARTTLS SMTP in osTicket v1.17-rc3 at the moment?

Yes, using the correct hostname and port 587 will use TLS. Not sure why it's not in your case. I was able to setup SMTP with basic auth successfully with Outlook.

I'm not running 1.17rc#, but these are the settings that we have used for O365 for years.

That looks like you don’t have SMTP enabled for that email address. Visit the link in the error to see your possible resolutions.

You need to go to 365 admin portal

Enable SMTP AUTH for specific mailboxes
The per-mailbox setting to enable (or disable) SMTP AUTH is available in the Microsoft 365 admin center or Exchange Online PowerShell.

Use the Microsoft 365 admin center to enable or disable SMTP AUTH on specific mailboxes
Open the Microsoft 365 admin center and go to Users > Active users.

Select the user, and in the flyout that appears, click Mail.

In the Email apps section, click Manage email apps.

Verify the Authenticated SMTP setting: unchecked = disabled, checked = enabled.

When you're finished, click Save changes.
