I have my own email server, just double checked, all seems ok on te email side. Osticket authenticates via smtp and does nothing. Also, connection problems are definitely not the case, as osticket vm lives on the same host as email server.
To clarify:
Validation failed for: ""some username""
It's osticket "internal" username, not email username. And is definitely not trying to authenticate with that name aganist email server, what I would clearly see in email logs.
Some more observations on the osticket side:
This problem is mostly limited to few users (reporters)
When it occur in a ticket, all other replies in this ticket are throwing the same error.
If I use "edit and resend" option on previously failed message, is sends without any problems.
